With WONDER WOMAN, Warner Bros. finally received the critical and commercial success they've been desperately needing since the DCEU began, but it also puts quite a lot of pressure on Patty Jenkins to craft a worthy sequel. The director has been hard at work developing the story for the WONDER WOMAN follow-up along with Geoff Johns and Dave Callaham, and production on the film will likely kick off sometime next year. Beyond a few rumours, which include a Cold War setting, we still don't know exactly what sort of adventures are in store for Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), but Patty Jenkins appeared on Variety's Playback podcast and said that we can expect a further exploration of Wonder Woman's core values, also teasing that the sequel will include another great love story as well as some new unbelievable characters.
It’s really still going to other values of hers, and a similar formula insofar as making a great, enjoyable fun movie but that ultimately in its third act turns some very big issues, and a very big experience that will aim to have slightly more weight and profundity than it has to have. Because that’s a formula that I really like, and I like the idea of taking somebody on a very solid, great journey but that arrives at a bigger question being answered. So it’s like that, but because she is Wonder Woman and she’s here now and she’s fully developed, it’s got great fun from the start and great big superhero presence from the start, and is funny and a great love story again and a couple new unbelievable characters who I’m so excited about, who are very different than were in the last movie.
Patty Jenkins added that the sequel will strive to hit a perfect balance between what people loved about the first film, while also "being a completely different story that tackles something very different but very similarly singular. One story." Jenkins' comment about another great love story doesn't necessarily mean that someone else will come along to replace Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) in Diana's heart, after all, there are many different forms of love which the filmmakers could spin to their advantage.
JUSTICE LEAGUE is now playing in theaters, while WONDER WOMAN 2 is set for a November 1, 2019 release.
