WONDER WOMAN is only one week away, and already the early response is hinting it could be the superhero movie to beat this year. Though we will have to wait and see for ourselves if that response holds up what we don’t have to wait for is news on if there will be a second film, because if there’s one thing that’s certain in this business it’s the word “sequel.” Patty Jenkins is already so confident she will get to make more that she already knows where the follow-up will take our heroine.
Jenkins sat down with Uproxx to talk about the upcoming superhero epic, which happens to take place during World War I. But that doesn’t mean WOMAN will end like CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER and see her jump to kicking ass in the present day. Jenkins was asked if that means WOMAN 2 could take place in the 30s or 40s, and to that she all but screamed, “YES!”:
It is for sure – I’m definitely planning something more interesting using that period of time. Definitely, it’s the plan. I can’t say what it is! But it’s definitely right in the pocket of what you’re talking about.
One of the aspects of the movie people are raving about is how the superhero combat meshes in with the WWI setting, turning period battle sequences into blockbuster thrills. Though we don’t know if Diana will get to do the same in WWII for the sequel, Jenkins did say she wants to try and bring forth a famous piece of Wonder Woman tech – the invisible jet:
[Laughs.] I’m gonna do it! I’m going to find a way!
When we published our “10 Things We’re Excited to See in WONDER WOMAN” piece, the WWI setting was one of the parts of the movie we were dying to see play out. We saw WWII played with in CAPTAIN AMERICA to pulpy success, but throwing Wonder Woman in there could mine-out a style that would seem totally fresh and grounded. The sequel may not occur in time of war, though, which could be a bit more of a challenge to bring to the screen. But Jenkins and Gadot are probably more than capable of bringing us, say, a Depression Era WONDER WOMAN movie. Diana fights the broken economy!
WONDER WOMAN arrives June 2 with Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston and more.
