It's a little sad to imagine a world in which Hugh Jackman isn't playing Wolverine, but as the actor is currently in the midst of production on what will be his final appearance as the character, I suppose it's something we'll have to get used to. While we're bidding farewell to Hugh Jackman next year, we may also be saying goodbye to Patrick Stewart's Professor X.
The actor recently spoke with ITV and revealed that the upcoming sequel could very well be his last appearance as Professor X in an X-MEN film.
I can’t say because I don’t know, but I would imagine this is probably the end of this franchise for me. But the thing about science fiction and fantasy is that you can never, ever say it’s the end, it’s over.
Patrick Stewart is wise enough and has been around the genre enough to know never to say never, after all, Charles Xavier seemingly met his end in X-MEN: THE LAST STAND only to return for several more installments of the franchise, but if the UNTITLED WOLVERINE SEQUEL really is the last time we see Stewart in the role, it will be interesting to see just where they plan on taking his character. We've seen a couple of set-photos which feature Professor X looking a little more frail than usual and Patrick Stewart teases that his character will be a "very different Charles Xavier, that’s all I’m allowed to say. Nothing like the Charles Xavier you’ve seen in the past." Cryptic.
The UNTITLED WOLVERINE SEQUEL is set for a March 3, 2017 release.
