Given that X-MEN: APOCALYPSE is set to take place in the 80s, it wouldn't make much sense to feature the aged Prof. X or Magneto (played to perfection by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, respectively). It came as little surprise that the two confirmed earlier that they would not be reprising their roles, although now someone's singing a different tune. Patrick Stewart recently spoke up about his X-future and while he's adamant he doesn't have a place in APOCALYPSE, he seems sure that Ian McKellen does. Furthermore, he seems enthused by the fact that he'll be teaming up with Weapon X in the next solo Wolverine flick.
Patrick Stewart regarding his future with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE:
Yes, I understand that it seems to be very unlikely that I will be in the next "X-Men" movie, which is almost getting ready to start shooting in Montreal. But Magneto, Ian McKellen, is certainly going to be in it. And what I'm very excited about is that we have been talking about a Wolverine movie, which would team Hugh Jackman and myself together. Wolverine and Professor Xavier. That would be a very different sort of "X-Men" from the four movies that I've already done.
You'll note that Stewart is reluctant to give a hard "no" regarding his involvement in APOCALYPSE although I don't doubt what he says. The news about McKellen returning is welcome, although not offiically confirmed. Usually I wouldn't take an actor's word regarding the cast or story of a film but the two seem to be pretty close, so I'm more willing to take his word for it. Either way, it sounds like we'll see Stewart return as Prof. X once again. You could argue that the relationship between him and Logan was the main focus of the first X-Men flick, and it'll be nice to see that come full circle for their last, if that is the case.
X-MEN: APOCALYPSE is scheduled to hit theaters on May 27, 2016.
