It's no surprise that one of the greatest television shows of all time is still making headlines. The ambiguous ending has people talking (mostly arguing in my house) about it as if it just ended last night. The seminal HBO show made its way on to Blu-ray this week and creator David Chase was out and about talking about its legacy. While promoting the release Chase had people intrigued with his take on what a Sopranos prequel might look like.
Talking to the Associated Press about the show, Chase said about returning to The Sopranos:
Even if I did it, it wouldn’t be ‘The Sopranos’ that was on the air — obviously at least one person is gone that we would need. There are a couple of eras that would be interesting for me to talk about, about Newark, New Jersey. One would be (the) late ’60s, early ’70s, about all the racial animosity, or the beginning, the really true beginning of the flood of drugs.
Could you imagine the pressure for Chase and company to come back to television with an idea like that? I’ve re-watched The Sopranos several times now and I’m still in awe with each viewing; it’s perfect TV that will never be matched. Obviously Chase’s quote doesn’t mean much of anything right now; he's just giving us more ideas of his to dissect. I will say that an HBO series set in the sixties involving the beginning of drug trafficking and organized crime could be highly entertaining.
What do you think, would you like to see Chase and HBO go for white gold?
This sketch from MADtv still makes me laugh:
