The brilliantly twisted mind of Korean director Park Chan-wook is heading into the world of sci-fi with a new thriller, SECOND BORN, which is based on an original screenplay by David Jagernauth. Per Variety, Park will direct for Rumble Films and David Lancaster, who recently produced WHIPLASH, NIGHTCRAWLER, and DRIVE. That’s a pretty good track record if you ask me, and SECOND BORN sounds like a surefire hit as well.
While it’s still too early to say who gets the nod to lead SECOND BORN, we do know that it takes place in a futuristic world in which neural microchip implants are used to store one’s consciousness, leading to black market body-swapping. A film so heavily rooted in science fiction should be a great fit for a mind like Park Chan-wook’s, allowing him to deliver something much different from what we’ve seen in the past. His last film, the fantastic STOKER, failed to find an audience (which is really a shame) so hopefully SECOND BORN garners the kind of attention that his films deserve.
Derby Street will finance development. Lancaster will produce with Stephanie Wilcox for Rumble alongside Wonjo Jeong, Park’s producing partner. Executive producers are James Gibb and Derby Street’s CEO Nicola Horlick, as well as Jon Shiffman for Rumble.
