Paramount Pictures has just announced a revolutionary modernization of their standard distribution process, which they'll be applying to their release of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE GHOST DIMENSION. The company plans to put the film up for purchase on home VOD platforms only 17 days after the film dips below 300 theaters, which would make the film go online while it's still playing in cinemas.
In a statement, Paramount CEO Brad Grey said:
Movie-lovers want us to respond and meet their desires. Exhibitors want to keep their businesses strong. Filmmakers want us to put a premium on the theatrical experience and optimize consumer access to their creations. Our hope and intent is that this initiative offers a degree of innovation that benefits all parties.
It'll be interesting to see if this bit of market cross-pollination works out, as distribution companies have been desparately trying to find new ways to combat the rise of online media. Perhaps the new PARANORMAL ACTIVITY wasn't the best film to start off with, considering it's in an already waning franchise and it's a 3D release, but it's a very intriguing step in an alarmingly strange direction.
THE GHOST DIMENSION, directed by Gregory Plotkin, follows a new family, the Fleeges — father Ryan (Chris J. Murray), mother Emily (Brit Shaw) and their young daughter Leila (Ivy George) — who move into a house and discover a video camera and a box of tapes in the garage.
When they look through the camera's lens, they begin to see the paranormal activity happening around them — including the re-emergence of young Kristi and Katie.
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE GHOST DIMENSION will haunt theaters on October 23rd and possess VOD a scant six weeks afterward.
