Paranormal Activity reboot: Jason Blum felt the franchise was tired

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Last year, it was revealed that Paramount, Blumhouse Productions, and screenwriter Christopher Landon were making a new entry in the Paranormal Activity franchise – but this isn't just another sequel. Landon said they were "rebooting" the franchise, and the film was later described as an "unexpected retooling". The new Paranormal Activity is expected to be released through the Paramount Plus streaming service by the end of the year, and during a recent interview with Collider producer Jason Blum confirmed that the film is finished and takes a different approach to the Paranormal Activity concept.

After telling Collider that "The movie's done", Blum went on to admit that it wasn't his idea to make another Paranormal Activity, this was something Paramount wanted to do. He felt the franchise was "tired":

Paramount wanted to continue Paranormal Activity, I probably would have left it alone. So they wanted to continue it, but I thought if they were gonna continue it, you gotta – it was tired, there was no way to continue the road that we’d been down. So I really encouraged all the creative people involved to think of something new. A lot of people who are going to go see the new Paranormal Activity were 3 years old when the first Paranormal Activity came out, so they don’t even know from those older movies. I thought if you were going to re-do it, you better really re-do it, not try and expand what we did all those years ago."

Blum did not elaborate on how this Paranormal Activity stands out from the rest.

Landon has plenty of previous Paranormal Activity experience – not only did he write the second, third, and fourth films, but he also wrote and directed Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones

The new Paranormal Activity was directed by franchise newcomer Will Eubank (Underwater) and stars Emily Bader, Roland Buck III, Dan Lippert, and Henry Ayres-Brown.

Paranormal Activity creator Oren Peli produced the film with Blum. Landon served as executive producer alongside Steven Schneider.

We'll let you know when a specific release date is announced.
