Producer Jason Blum said the Paranormal Activity franchise went dormant for a while after the release of 2015’s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension because he felt the series had gotten tired – and it wasn’t his idea to make last year’s Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, either. He wanted to leave the series alone, but Paramount wanted another entry. And even though he produced Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, he definitely wasn’t a fan of it. In fact, he was so disappointed with that movie, it seems he felt it proved his point about Paranormal Activity. He thinks the franchise needs to end.
Speaking with Variety, Blum said,
It has been enough already. That last Paranormal Activity movie was terrible. With Halloween, we only had the rights to three movies, so we said: Halloween Ends! It ends for Blumhouse, at least. With other things, you just have this feeling it’s time to put them to bed. It would come back if some director I love, like Scott Derrickson, said: ‘I have a great idea for a Paranormal Activity movie. But it’s not something I want to do [at the moment].”
Despite Blum’s statement that the franchise needs to end and that another Paranormal Activity is not something he wants to do at the moment, the Variety article includes the information that another Paranormal Activity movie is in the works and is “currently eyeing a 2023 release.” So we’ll have to wait and see how this is going to play out.
Although Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin was written by franchise regular Christopher Landon, it told a story that was separate from the other films in the franchise. Franchise newcomer Will Eubank (Underwater) directed the movie, which starred Emily Bader, Roland Buck III, Dan Lippert, and Henry Ayres-Brown. Paranormal Activity creator Oren Peli produced Next of Kin with Blum. Landon served as executive producer alongside Steven Schneider.
