Paramount may distribute Terminator 5 with filming eyed to begin in 2014

Arnold Schwarzenegger himself declared that TERMINATOR 5 was coming soon and now it appears closer than ever. The Wrap is reporting that Paramount Pictures is close to getting distribution rights for TERMINATOR 5 and beyond for Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures and David Ellison’s Skydance Productions.

This comes on the cusp of Justin Lin backing out of directing FAST AND FURIOUS 7, just in time to possibly jump back into directing the next TERMINATOR movie, a film he was linked to a couple of years ago. Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier were brought on to write the screenplay back in January and beyond Schwarzenegger’s involvement not much else is known. If Paramount does provide the backing to make the film, I would expect more announcements of cast and crew very soon.

The Ellisons bought the rights to THE TERMINATOR back in 2011 for $20 million with an eye to get as many films produced between now and 2019 when the rights to the characters and franchise revert to James Cameron. The most recent entry in the series was TERMINATOR: SALVATION which disappointed but still grossed over $350 million worldwide. It is unknown if the fifth film will be a sequel to SALVATION or take the franchise in a different direction.

Do you think Justin Lin is still the right choice for TERMINATOR 5?
