Love it, hate it, or absolutely despise it, the numbers tell the ultimate story and after a strong weekend debut, Paramount has greenlit a sequel to the revamped heroes-in-a-half-shell, which is currently slated for a June 3, 2016 release. Michael Bay will return to produce with Platinum Dunes partners Andrew Form, Brad Fuller, Galen Walker, and Scott Mednick. Screenwriters Josh Appelbaum & André Nemec are also returning to write the mutated sequel.
The franchise reboot brought in a worldwide take of $97.3 million ($65 million domestic take) at the box office, which is surprising given the overall fan controversy since the project was announced and the abyssmal reviews (ours here) that seemed to plague it. However, it's become quite apparent that the reviews meant little to those who wanted to see their favorite mutated turtles kicking ass on the big screen again, so this definitely goes in the "win" category for the studio and those who enjoyed the flick. Perhaps the severe lack in kids films this summer played a big role in its success or maybe even morbid curiosity from those who grew up with the 90's films (and animated series), but either way the Turtles are a hit and will be back for more.
Adam Goodman, President of Paramount’s Film Group said in a statement this morning that it was no small feat getting the film to theaters:
“Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before. The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story.”
