Pacific Rim: Uprising synopsis released ahead of NYCC trailer

The first PACIFIC RIM movie has become a genre favorite over the years, and next year we will finally get a sequel – PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING – after five years of waiting. When it comes to giant robots bashing giant monsters that wait can feel like an eternity, so the sooner this thing comes the better. The movie will get its first full trailer this week when it debuts at New York Comic Con, but if this week isn’t soon enough, then we have for you the full plot synopsis for the robot-monster slugfest ready for you to read right now. "The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising.

John Boyega (STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.

Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS’ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.

For those who have not memorized the first PACIFIC RIM like the back of your robot hand, Boyega will be playing the son of Idris Elba’s character in the first movie. You know, the one who gave the awesome speech and effectively canceled the apocalypse. The movie will also star Jing Tian, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona and Charlie Day, and is being directed by Steven S. DeKnight (of the Netflix/Marvel DAREDEVIL series).

We got a teaser (as above) for the movie a few months ago and a new poster (so below) recently, but other than that we haven’t gotten a lot in terms of promotional content or BTS glimpses. The plot synopsis at least gives us an idea where the story is heading, although it does sound a bit similar to the plot of the first movie (the lead character also being a former Jaeger pilot being brought back after leaving the program). But, hey, at least this one will be…shinier?
