I have a love/hate relationship with the original PACIFIC RIM. I was so hyped for it before it came out – being a big fan of Guillermo del Toro, anime, and cheesy kaiju films – that the film couldn't help but let me down. Don't get me wrong, many of the fights were cool, and the kaiju and jaeger designs were definitely awesome, but the lead was boring and too many of the fights were in the rain, at night, in the middle of the ocean. It got too visually repetitive for a film that was otherwise brimming with imagination. But Idris Elba and Rinko Kikuchi put in great performances, and the bit in Sydney as well as the Hong Kong fight were memorable showstoppers. So, yeah, love/hate.
Having said all that, though, I am super stoked for the sequel! For one, it will focus on the son of the best character (John Boyega as Idris Elba's son), and there's hope that the locales will be much more visually interesting (or at least varied) this time around.
Anyway, a new recruitment video/teaser just came out, so let's take a look:
Not much new footage, but it's still very stylish nonetheless. I'm certainly pumped!
Meanwhile, PACIFIC RIM UPRISING will punch into theaters February 23rd, 2018.
