The Crown is intended to span sixty episodes spread out over six seasons as it tells the story of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, with new actors stepping into the main roles every two seasons. The first two seasons starred Claire Foy (THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB) as Elizabeth and Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Philip, and now Deadline has reported that Tobias Menzies (The Terror) has closed a deal to play Prince Philip in the third season of the Netflix series.
Paul Bettany (AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR) had been in early talks to play Prince Phillip earlier this year, but was forced to drop out when he realized that he wasn't going to be able to take part due to the time commitment. Tobias Menzies will play Prince Philip for the next two seasons, alongside Olivia Colman (Broadchurch) stepping into the role of Queen Elizabeth II. Helena Bonham Carter (OCEAN'S 8) is also set to play Princess Margaret, replacing Vanessa Kirby (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT). Production on the third season of The Crown is slated to kick off in the U.K. this summer. You can currently see Tobias Menzies in AMC's The Terror, and the actor has had quite the illustrious career on television, with appearances on Rome, Game of Thrones, Outlander, Black Mirror, The Night Manager, and more.
The Terror, which I can't wait to check out once I have the time, airs Monday's on AMC.
