These days part of the fun of watching a movie in theaters or at home with the ability to freeze frames, is finding the hidden Easter eggs hidden within. For the history buffs out there, the origin of the cinematic Easter egg dates back to THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. Supposedly one day on the set, the cast decided to have a traditional Easter egg hunt, as you do, but some of the eggs were never found and actually appeared in frames of the movie! So if you're obsessed with finding hidden messages, jokes, and ways to make you look smart in front of your friends, check out these Easter eggs!
Understandably some of these have been around for a while, but some may be new to other readers; there’s no expiration date on sharing so enjoy and have fun!
**POSSIBLE SPOILERS**
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN – Get him Frank
In Steven Spielberg’s excellent CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, Leonardo DiCaprio plays Frank Abagnale Jr., a trickster that puts all other tricksters to shame. In an ironic egg, the real-life Abagnale makes a cameo in as an arresting officer of himself. Playing a French policeman, Abagnale helps "Abagnale" into a cop car as you can see in the image.
Talking about the movie, the real-life Abagnale said: "It’s quite flattering to have Leonardo DiCaprio play you in the movie. He’s a great-looking young man … I was very blessed it was Steven Spielberg who made the movie. He was very much into the redemption side of the story." And when asked why he had owned the rights to this story for 20 years before he made the movie and he said: "I wanted to see what the real Frank Abagnale did with his life before I immortalized him on film."
BRIDE OF CHUCKY – Iconic evidence
The BRIDE OF CHUCKY is my favorite entry in the Child’s Play franchise; it’s so self-aware that it’s hard not to love its charming ways. It actually takes aim at some other notable horror icons right off the bat in the beginning of the movie at the Lockport police evidence depository. You can see Jason Voorhees' hockey mask, Leatherface's chainsaw, Freddy Krueger's glove, and Michael Myers' mask. While the glove and hockey mask are fitting because Ronny Yu, who directed the movie, also directed FREDDY VS. JASON, it’s interesting that he wanted to throw the other guys in there too.
HOME ALONE 2: LOST IN NEW YORK – The Don
The Plaza Hotel has been featured in many movies set in New York, today we look at its significance in HOME ALONE 2. When Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) first enters the hotel he asks a man where the lobby is. This man is actually the owner of the Plaza Hotel Donald Trump. I bet our parents got a kick out of that when they took us to see this movie.
Here's a classic scene:
SUPER 8 – Nod to Romero
In J.J. Abrams' 2011 gem SUPER 8, the main group of friends, led by wannabe-director Charles, decide to make a low-budget zombie movie for an international film competition. In the zombie film, the chemical factory being blamed for the zombie outbreak is named Romero Chemicals. This is a clear reference to the godfather of the zombie film, George A. Romero (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD).
Watch the entire short film, it's awesome:
STAR WARS EPISODE III: REVENGE OF THE SITH – But who’s driving?
One of the few moments in EPISODE III that didn’t play out as if it were a video game is a subtle egg to the iconic spacecraft known as the Millenium Falcon, you’ve heard of it I assume. This egg happens after Anakin and Obi-Wan crash land what is left of General Grievous' ship and are taken on a transport. When the transport is landing, on the lower right of the screen you can see the Millenium Falcon land.
You can watch a video below, which does a great job at pointing out its surprisingly noticeable inclusion:
