The Oscars will let Twitter vote on their favorite movie of 2021

The nominations for the 94th Annual Academy Awards were unveiled last week with The Power of the Dog, Dune, and Belfast leading the pack. Some were disappointed that the biggest movie of the year — Spider-Man: No Way Home — didn’t score a Best Picture nomination, but fans now have a way for their voices to be heard. The Academy announced today via THR that you’ll be able to vote for your favorite movie of 2021 on Twitter, with the winner being recognized at the Oscars.

Whether or not the movie was nominated for an Oscar, fans can use the hashtag #OscarsFanFavorite to cast up to 20 votes a day for their favorite from now until March 3rd. Additionally, three lucky Twitter users who cast their votes during that period will be selected (guests included) to have an all-expenses-paid trip to Los Angeles to present an award at next year’s Oscars.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Twitter to help build an engaged and excited digital audience leading up to this year’s ceremony,” Meryl Johnson, vp digital marketing at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, told THR. “Through these activations, social media users around the world now have more opportunities to engage with the show in real time, find a community and be a part of the experience in ways they’ve never been able to before.” The fan-favorite film won’t be a formal Oscars category, but it does give fans a voice during the most prestigious (depending on who you talk to) Award’s ceremony of the year. Dozens of Cosmic Sin fans have been waiting for this moment. This can’t go wrong.

In addition to casting your vote for your favorite movie of 2021, you can also tweet your favorite scene from a 2021 film using #OscarsCheerMoment. Those scenes will be shown at the ceremony and five Twitter users who participated will receive a prize package that includes a full year of free movie tickets, subscriptions to streaming services, and exclusive items from the Academy Museum store. “Twitter is the place to be during award shows and the Oscars is one of the biggest conversation drivers every year,” said Sarah Rosen, Twitter’s head of U.S. entertainment and news partnerships. “The idea that a movie fan might see their tweet during the Oscars broadcast is pretty epic, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with the Academy to bring this to life.” While this isn’t quite on the same level, you might remember that the Academy once considered creating a Most Popular Film category, but they wound up scrapping the idea a month later due to the backlash. Got to get those ratings up somehow.
