Animation fanatics rejoice, for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled a list of 25 films that have been submitted for consideration with regard to the Animated Feature Film category for the 91st Oscars. As you take a look at the collection of films below, remember to keep in mind that several of them have yet to make their required Los Angeles qualifying run.
Here's the master list of films to be considered:
ANA Y BRUNO
DR. SEUSS' THE GRINCH
EARLY MAN
FIREWORKS
HAVE A NICE DAY
HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3: SUMMER VACATION
INCREDIBLES 2
ISLE OF DOGS
THE LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE – PART 1
LIZ AND THE BLUE BIRD
LU OVER THE WALL
MFKZ
MAQUIA: WHEN THE PROMISED FLOWER BLOOMS
MIRAI
THE NIGHT IS SHORT, WALK ON GIRL
ON HAPPINESS ROAD
RAPLH BREAKS THE INTERNET
RUBEN BRANDT, COLLECTOR
SGT. STUBBY: AN AMERICAN HERO
SHERLOCK GNOMES
SMALLFOOT
SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE
TALL TALES
TEEN TITANS GO! TO THE MOVIES
TITO AND THE BIRDS
If I had to hedge my bets for five of the 25 films submitted to make the cut, my money would be on INCREDIBLES 2, ISLE OF DOGS, RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET, SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, and EARLY MAN making the cut. Among the aforementioned films, I'm almost certain that director Brad Bird's INCREDIBLES 2 will take home the prize. In fact, the only film that I see giving the animated superhero sequel a run for its money is Wes Anderson's ISLE OF DOGS, which in my opinion delivered an emotional and harrowing tale of survival and redemption all wrapped in a stylish stop-motion animated package. That said, there's a chance that Disney's Wreck-It Ralph sequel could break a lot more than the internet come awards season.
