Even as the Charmed reboot came to an end after four seasons on The CW, the feud between the writers on the original series, which aired on The WB, and the reboot writing staff continued as it began when the reboot was first announced. Following the airing of the reboot’s series finale, a witches’ feud began brewing between both sides.
The Charmed reboot ended its four-season run on June 10, 2022, and it did so with a nod to the original series. During the finale, the reboot’s Charmed Ones, played by Melonie Diaz, Sarah Jefferey, and Lucy Barrett, were sent through a portal to Halliwell Manor, the home of the original witches consisting of Prue (Shannon Doherty), Piper (Holly Marie Combs), Phoebe (Alyssa Milano), and Paige (Rose McGowan). Original series writer Curtis Kheel apparently wasn’t too fond of the nod and he took to Twitter saying, “As an original #Charmed writer, I can tell u what happened next: Piper, Phoebe, & Paige vanquished the 3 impostors right after they invaded Halliwell Manor. Then @H_Combs blew up the portal to that other universe and quipped: ‘We wish them well.’ #seriesfinale #CharmedReunionMovie.” You can check out the Twitter post below!
Kheel’s comments were not ignored by the writers behind the reboot. Responding from a joint Twitter account, the writers said, “Unlike with the OG version of the franchise, we had a strict ‘no a**holes’ hiring policy in the writer’s room. We feel mostly sorry for these people, because unlike them, we actually like each other and had the BEST time. Onward…”
The Charmed writer’s Twitter page went on to state, “And for the record, we LOVE both versions. Which is why we set out to create a cohesive universe. In our minds, there is zero competition in a long line of strong young witches tasked with repeatedly saving the world.” Kheel felt the need to clarify his comments and it just seemed to add more fuel to the fire. Kheel said, “The idea that there are more #CharmedOnes than just Prue/Piper/Phoebe/Paige is retrofit nonsense, meant to legitimize the reboot. I call bullsh–. Yes, there is a multiverse. We saw plenty of alternate universes in the original show so that’s not a new concept at all. However, in the Charmed multiverse, Prue/Piper/Phoebe/Paige are ALWAYS the Charmed Ones in every universe. Otherwise, it’s not #Charmed. It’s just another show pretending to be Charmed because Paramount decided they could make some money by slapping that title on it.”
This all seems really petty but this has been going on since the reboot premiered four seasons ago. Holly Marie Combs railed against the marketing of the reboot which called it “fierce, funny, and feminist.” Combs felt the show was “capitalizing on our hard work” while Rose McGowan, without even seeing the reboot, said that “it sucks.” Sarah Jeffery, who starred in the reboot, hit back at their comments by saying, “You know, I saw this earlier and I refrained from saying anything. I thought, better to just let them shout into the abyss. But I do want to say, I find it sad and quite frankly pathetic to see grown women behaving this way.”
Judging from the last portion of Kheel’s tweet. He will never have love for the Charmed reboot. He concluded by saying, “My problem with the #Charmedreboot is that from Day One, it pretended like the original #Charmed didn’t exist, yet it borrowed a ton of ideas from it. We worked very hard on the OG series for many years & to disregard that is offensive & disrespectful to US & our fans.”
