We all have movies that perhaps we're not exactly proud of enjoying, but for whatever reason, we seem to hold those in the film industry to a higher standard; "Surely these titans of cinema don't like the same schlock as I?" While speaking with Empire recently, AVATAR director James Cameron revealed one of his own guilty-pleasure movies, and it's rather surprising, at least to me.
One of my guilty-pleasure films that I actually think is quite beautifully made is Resident Evil. Watching Michelle Rodriguez in that film, moving like this feral creature, is joyful.
Michelle Rodriguez would go on to feature in James Cameron's AVATAR (as well as make a cameo appearance in ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL), but RESIDENT EVIL was one of Rodriguez's first major films following GIRLFIGHT and THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS. Admittedly, when I think of the RESIDENT EVIL films, I think of the more overly-processed sequels, so perhaps it's time to revisit the original film. James Cameron went on to say that he's been attempting to provide something of a cinematic education for his children during the COVID-19 lockdown by organizing family movie nights. "I’ve got my kids at home and their taste is so different than mine," Cameron said. "But I try to expand their horizon a little bit. They got a hankering for a Western the other night and I said, ‘What about True Grit with John Wayne?’ They said, ‘Who?’ I said, ‘Alright, we’re watching True Grit.’ They absolutely loved it. My teenage girls are very horse-oriented, and now they know who John Wayne is."
Speaking of RESIDENT EVIL, the franchise may be destined for a reboot as a TV series adaptation was in the works for Netflix before it was forced to shut down due to COVID-19. There's also a big-screen reboot in the works, which, at last note, was slated to be helmed by 47 METERS DOWN director Johannes Roberts. Now, getting back to guilty pleasure movies, let's hear about a few of yours!
