Official Dune synopsis promises mythic & emotionally charged hero’s journey

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Denis Villeneuve's big-budget reboot of Frank Herbert's DUNE has begun shooting at locations in Budapest and Jordan and we're excited as hell that it finally came together. Since this new version didn't have an official synopsis for the longest time, I have just been throwing up the plot rundown for David Lynch's version to split the difference. But that all ends today as we now have an official synopsis for Villeneuve's DUNE.

It goes a little something like this:

A mythic and emotionally charged hero's journey, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet's exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence-a commodity capable of unlocking humanity's greatest potential-only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

The killer cast for the film includes – wait for it because this shite is crazy – Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, Dave Bautista as Rabban, Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Harkonnen, David Dastmalchian as Piter De Vries, and Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Mohiam.

Villeneuve directs this new take on DUNE from a screenplay he co-wrote along with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. Villeneuve is also producing with Mary Parent, and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, Thomas Tull, and Kim Herbert executive producing. Kevin J. Anderson serves as a creative consultant. DUNE will be hitting your local multiplex in both 3D and IMAX the weekend before Thanksgiving November 20th, 2020.

Nice! Truth be told I was never confident this movie would ever actually make it to the screen. Too risky I thought. But all the same, I'm excited to hear the film is moving ahead right on track for its Thanksgiving 2020 release date. Hoo-ray!
