Margot Robbie and Jay Roach (Bombshell, Austin Powers film series) are planning a heist. To be more precise, the duo will team for an Ocean’s Eleven prequel at Warner Bros. Robbie will star and produce a new movie in the Ocean’s Eleven series with Jay Roach directing. Robbie and Roach previously teamed up for 2019’s Bombshell, which earned Robbie a best-supporting actress Oscar nomination.
Robbie is producing with Tom Ackerley, her partner at the production label LuckyChap. Roach is also producing alongside his executive partner at Everyman Pictures, Michelle Graham. Carrie Solomon is penning the script, but details about the plot are scarce. However, we’ve heard the Ocean’s Eleven prequel takes place in Europe in the 1960s. The project is in active development but has not been given the green light. When the deal goes through, the project is looking to start production in 2023.
Gary Ross, Olivia Milch, and Lucky Chap’s Josey McNamara will also executive produce with Village Roadshow executive producing and possibly co-financing the feature.
Steven Soderbergh directed three installments of the Ocean’s Eleven series, while Ocean’s 8, starring Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean, was helmed by Gary Ross. The original film featured George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, and others simultaneously robbing three Las Vegas casinos. Presented as a quasi-remake of the 1960 Rat Pack movie, Soderbergh’s Ocean’s franchise grossed over $450 million worldwide.
Robbie and Roach could swing for the fences when casting the Ocean’s Eleven prequel. Ensemble projects are a hot commodity in Hollywood these days. With Robbie’s influence, many of Hollywood’s brightest stars could trip over themselves for a chance to star in this exciting project.
