It has been a big week for Obi-Wan Kenobi news. First, we were greeted with first-look images from the series and that was followed by a teaser trailer for the upcoming Disney+ Star Wars series. The next day, we were given our first look at Darth Vader in another image courtesy of Entertainment Weekly and now we’re getting a bit more clarity on how long the show is planned to run.

As of now, Obi-Wan Kenobi is being set up as a 6-episode limited series but, in the recent Entertainment Weekly cover story for the show, a possible season 2 was mentioned. Director Deborah Chow stuck to the limited series format by saying, “It was definitely conceived as a limited series, and it is one big story with a beginning, middle, and end. The approach has always been that it is one full story.” In the same story, however, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that there have been discussions about a potential season 2. Here is what she had to say:

“It’s certainly something we talk about, mainly because everybody came together and had such an incredible time. Ewan had an incredible time. Hayden had an incredible time. So certainly from that point of view, everybody involved would love to see this not end. But we have to really spend our time asking the question: Why would we do it? If we were to decide to do anything more with the Obi-Wan character, we’d have to really answer the question why?”

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series began shooting in April of last year and the story is set 10 years after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. In addition to Ewan McGregor returning as the titular character, the series has also been touting the return of Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader. Joining McGregor and Christensen is a truly interesting ensemble cast that includes Joel Edgerton, Moses Ingram, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series was originally announced at the D23 Expo in August of 2019. Deborah Chow is set to direct the show and will executive produce with Hossein Amini, who also wrote the series. McGregor, Kathleen Kennedy, and Tracey Seaward will also serve as executive producers on the project.

Do YOU think Obi-Wan Kenobi will get a season 2? Obi-Wan Kenobi hits Disney+ on May 25, 2022.
