Norman Reedus has been living in the world of the undead for well over a decade at this point, and he doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Reedus has played Daryl Dixon since the very first season of The Walking Dead, and even when the series comes to an end later this year, the actor will be featured in his very own spinoff.
AMC president Dan McDermott told Entertainment Weekly that The Walking Dead spinoff “follows Daryl as he wakes up and finds himself somewhere on the European continent and tries to piece together what happened. How did he get here? How’s he going to get home?” The spinoff has gone through several changes since its inception. It was originally announced that the spinoff would also star Melissa McBride as Carol, but McBride decided to drop out due to the shoot taking place overseas. Even with all the changes, Norman Reedus wanted to make sure that the Daryl spinoff stood on its own from the rest of the Walking Dead universe.
We knew we wanted to make a show that went in the opposite direction, just because we didn’t want to do the same thing. So that’s what we’re doing. And it’s going to be way different. The story’s way different. The characters are way different. There’s a different tone, there’s different light, there’s a different sound. It’s a whole different vibe.
The actor added the spinoff is “going to be f—ng epic.” Switching up the location from the United States to Europe should be a lot of fun, and it will be interesting to see how other countries are handling the zombie apocalypse.
Of course, this isn’t the only Walking Dead spinoff in the works. There’s also The Walking Dead: Dead City, which will focus on Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) “traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror.” Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) will also be returning for another spinoff. The project originally began as a trilogy of Rick Grimes movies, but has been transformed into a six-episode series which will present an “epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world.“
The final eight-episodes of The Walking Dead will begin airing on October 2nd.
