Bob Odenkirk's action movie Nobody is distancing itself a bit from Warner Bros. and their long Easter weekend launch of Godzilla vs. Kong. Universal Pictures has decided to open the film a week early on March 26, 2021. The film was originally set for release on Good Friday, April 2, 2021.
Warner Bros. moved the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, which is set to open in theaters and debut on HBO Max on the same day, to Wednesday, March 31, 2021, to take as much advantage of the five-day holiday weekend as possible. I don't think Warner Bros. is expecting a huge windfall since movie theaters remain at limited capacity and many are still shuttered but the recent announcement that New York City will begin reopening their theaters on March 5, 2021, at reduced capacity, probably gives the studio some confidence that the tentpole release can perform better than expected.
Universal Pictures likely moved Nobody a bit away from Godzilla vs. Kong because they believe it has the potential to do at least modest business. The studio released a TV spot for the film during the pregame of Super Bow and the spot registered close to 5 million views on social media in the 24 hour period following its drop. We didn't get the usual number of high-profile TV spots during the Super Bowl because of the uncertainty of the release schedule due to the pandemic. Universal Pictures doubled down by dropping two spots with Nobody and Fast & Furious 9 making an appearance during the game. This move seems to show some confidence on their part that Nobody is worth a trip to the movie theater for moviegoers.
Directed by Ilya Naishuller, Nobody follows Hutch Mansell (Odenkirk), an underestimated and mild-mannered family man that is described as being unresisting to his life's hardships. One night, when two thieves break into his home, he declines to defend himself or his family, hoping to prevent any serious complications. The incident ignites his resentment towards being an unsubstantial father and husband; thus awakening his suppressed skills and illuminating his dark secrets. The film also stars Connie Nielsen, RZA, Aleksei Serebryakov, and Christopher Lloyd.
