In Nobody, Bob Odenkirk is playing a bit against type and going full-on action star in the latest film from Universal Pictures. Odenkirk isn't the first person you think of when it comes to action but a new behind-the-scenes video shows the training that the actor endured to take on this new role and it displays a performer that was 100% committed to the grueling training regimen. You can check out the training video at the top of the page!
Directed by Ilya Naishuller, Nobody finds Odenkirk playing Hutch Mansell, "an unassuming family man who cowers and folds during a home invasion. His post-traumatic shame disorder reignites a long-cooled fire within, and he summons a secret lethal skill set for a revenge mission, only to see it backfire spectacularly and put his family in greater jeopardy." Odenkirk mentions in the behind-the-scenes video that he got started in the business as a comedy writer so this kind of physicality isn't something he's used to but judging from his training snippet, he is more than capable of taking on a more action-oriented and physical role. The fight coordinator reveals that training for the film began in November of 2017 and Odenkirk never wavered in his determination to make every punch and kick looking entirely convincing.
Nobody was originally slated for release on August 14, 2020, but the film was pushed six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Universal Pictures toyed with a few release dates for Nobody before finally landing on March 26, 2021. The studio appears to have some faith in the project because it was one of the few films to run a Super Bowl TV spot during this year's big game. Written by Derek Kolstad, the film also stars Connie Nielsen, RZA, Aleksei Serebryakov, and Christopher Lloyd.
Does this behind-the-scenes look convince YOU that Bob Odenkirk has what it takes to be an action star?
