From late 2012 into mid-2014, we followed the development of a cinematic adaptation of the comic book series LOCKE & KEY. Universal Studios picked up the film rights to the material, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci were attached to produce, Albert Torres was hired to write a screenplay, and there was a plan in place to turn the story of the comic book into a trilogy of films.
That story:
Locke & Key tells of three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine. They soon discover the house has magical keys that give the bearers a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know (but they soon will) that a devious demon also wants the keys.
After more than a year of silence, we have heard an update on LOCKE & KEY's status, and it's not the most joyous news. The book's creator, author Joe Hill, has told BrokeHorrorFan that the Universal adaptation is no longer happening.
There is a glimmer of hope, however. LOCKE & KEY's publisher IDW Publishing is getting into producing television shows, and through them the comic may end up becoming a TV series.
If IDW does pursue the idea of turning LOCKE & KEY into a TV show, this will be the second attempt to bring the project to the small screen. In 2011, a pilot was put together at Fox that was co-written by Kurtzman and Orci, executive produced by Steven Spielberg, and directed by Mark Romanek. The cast included Miranda Otto, Jesse McCartney, Sarah Bolger, Skylar Gertner, and Nick Stahl. Unfortunately, Fox decided not to take it to series.
I haven't read LOCKE & KEY, but it sounds interesting. For the sake of its fans who are wanting to see some kind of adaptation, I hope things will work out this time.
