While the world waits with bated breath for Chris Pratt to reveal his Mario voice for Super Mario Bros: The Movie, Nintendo is munching on Super Mushrooms and growing their brand in the film industry. According to recent documents, Nintendo is on track to acquire Dynamo Pictures, a CG animation company that will become Nintendo Pictures. Once the transformation is complete, the studio plans to adapt more of Nintendo’s IPs. Nintendo has not revealed what properties the studio intends to adopt.
The deal is set for confirmation on October 3, as long as Bowser doesn’t show up and derail the process. Once the ink is dry, Nintendo confirmed that “the company name Dynamo Pictures is expected to be changed to ‘Nintendo Pictures Co., Ltd.’ To focus on development of visual content utilizing Nintendo IP.”
If you’re unfamiliar with Dynamo Pictures, they’ve worked on projects like Ghost in the Shell, Studio Ghibli’s Earwig and the Witch, Nier Replicant, Mega Man, Death Stranding, and titles in the Resident Evil franchise. While Nintendo has yet to reveal any potential plans for the studio, fans may eventually see adaptations of The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Animal Crossing, or Luigi’s Mansion.
Meanwhile, Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros: The Movie is set for a 2023 release. The CG animated adventure starring many of Nintendo’s most iconic characters features Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael-Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong. There is incredible hype for Super Mario Bros: The Movie after the success of films like Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. With several other video game adaptations from multiple studios in the works, Hollywood hopes to tap into another nostalgia-driven market and frack it for all its worth.
