Nintendo confirms Wii 2 for 2012, what does it mean for movies?

In a rare Easter weekend move, Nintendo actually addressed those Wii 2 rumors and whaddya know, they actually confirmed them! In a written statement released late last night, Nintendo said the following:

“Nintendo Co. Ltd. has decided to launch in 2012 a system in to succeed Wii…We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held from June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles.”

The new system, currently code-named “Project Cafe,” is expected to be the most powerful console on the market when it’s released and will remain that way for at least two years, as neither Microsoft nor Playstation will be upgrading their consoles until 2014.

But what does that mean for people who use consoles as more than just a way to play the latest Super Mario Bros. game (as if that’s not enough). The new console will almost certainly include a built-in Blu-ray player and increase the Wii’s online compatibility. You can currently stream Netflix on the Wii but not in HD, something that will very likely change. You can also expect to see some sort of Nintendo market, like the Xbox Marketplace and Playstation Network, that may allow you to purchase movies, TV shows and more. It does not appear at this point that the new Wii console will include 3D.

On the gaming side, it’s been rumored that the new console will be essentially a giant Nintendo DS with the controller acting as the touchscreen and your TV, the top screen. There will be no shortage of rumors as E3 approaches and we’ll follow them closely and bring you reports from the conference as Nintendo makes the big announcement.
