Night Watch (2004) Revisited – Horror Movie Review

A new episode of our video series Best Foreign Horror Movies has just been released under the Revisited banner, and in this one we’re looking at the 2004 Russian movie Night Watch (watch it HERE). An “urban fantasy supernatural thriller”, Night Watch is noted as being the highest-grossing Russian release ever and one of the first blockbusters produced after the collapse of the Soviet film industry.

Directed by Timur Bekmambetov from a screenplay he wrote with Laeta Kalogridis, Night Watch is loosely based on the 1998 novel The Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko. The film has the following synopsis:

Hundreds of years ago there was a battle between the Warriors of Light and the evil Warriors of Darkness. Realizing that they were evenly matched, the two sides agreed to a truce. The fragile peace between good and evil is kept in place by two groups: the Day Watch and the Night Watch, each monitoring the opposing side. Now Night Watch member Anton Gorodetsky finds himself at the center of a prophecy that may mark the end of the delicate balance between the two sides.

Night Watch stars Konstantin Khabensky, Vladimir Menshov, Valeri Zolotukhin, Mariya Poroshina, and Galina Tyunina.
