Exactly one month ago today we learned that Daniel Zovatto of IT FOLLOWS and DON'T BREATHE will be starring in the upcoming Showtime series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, a "spiritual descendant" of the Penny Dreadful series that ran on Showtime for three seasons. Now the names of two more cast members have been announced, and they'll be playing the younger siblings of Zovatto's character.
Created by John Logan, who also created Penny Dreadful and wrote most of its episodes himself, City of Angels is set in
in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension. Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will explore an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of that period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop.
Zovatto is playing Tiago Vega, the LAPD's "first Mexican-American detective", who will have to deal with "racism, childhood trauma, and faith issues" over the course of the series. Vega will also be
investigating a grisly murder that eventually becomes an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles.
Joining Zovatto are Johnathan Nieves and Jessica Garza.
Nieves, whose previous credits include episodes of Shameless and Better Call Saul, will be playing Tiago's volatile younger brother Mateo. "Though essentially goodhearted, he lacks the clear strength and ambition of Tiago and is vulnerable to both his own capricious emotions and influences around him."
Garza, who had a role in the Syfy/USA series The Purge (pictured above), is taking on the role of Josefina, the youngest of the Vega family. "She plays the part of the quiet and overlooked younger sister but possesses a powerful spirit waiting to be unleashed." That "possesses a powerful spirit" description could mean she's going to be coming out of her shell, or in the world of Penny Dreadful it could also mean that her body is inhabited by some sort of supernatural being.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is being executive produced by Logan, Michael Aguilar, Sam Mendes, and Pippa Harris. James Bagley serves as co-executive producer.
There's no word on when this show might make its debut on Showtime, but we'll let you know when there is.
