Okay folks, say it with me. Are you ready? On three. One … two … three … "That Nicolas Cage movie actually looks amazing!" Heh. It's been a while since those words have left your lips, eh? And yet, here we are, no doubt enjoying the trailer for Brian Taylor's MOM AND DAD, a brutal suburban comedy horror film set to make its debut on January 19th, 2018.
In the film, a teenage girl and her little brother must survive a wild 24 hours during which a mass hysteria of unknown origins causes parents to turn violently on their own kids. In the lead-up to the film's release, this zany-looking comedy has been described by Empire Online as THE STEPFATHER meets HOME ALONE. After watching the trailer for myself, I can easily see how those comparisons could be made. I'm also feeling a little 28 DAYS LATER on this one, with whatever infects the parents acting like some offshoot of Danny Boyle's Rage Virus.
For my money, this looks like the coolest project that Cage has contributed to for quite some time. It's been ages since I've enjoyed a tried-and-true Cage freakout, and this movie looks to provide plenty of fuel to be poured atop the actor's ever-burning fire for the ridiculous. Of course, let's not forget about Selma Blair, who in no doubt prepared to lend her own unique energy to this bizarre (and somewhat fantasy-driven) film. I can totally see this becoming a "guilty pleasure" watch for parents everywhere. After all, I've not met a single parent who has not had the desire to tell their child that they're being a little asshole, at some point or another. Perhaps this film will offer them each a bit of catharsis, no?
MOM AND DAD is set for a Januray 19th release.
