One of my favorite cinematic ghost stories is Robert Wise's extraordinary fright-fest, THE HAUNTING – and no I don't count that awful 1999 remake. The classic 1963 film terrified me on many levels. The unsettling nature of the house, the voices, the loud banging, and that uncomfortable tension that permeated throughout made for a horrifying movie watching experience. This same story was also superbly explored in Mike Flanagan's elegant and eerie Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House. The original film left a huge impression on me and certainly led me to my current love of the unknown. And thankfully, Mr. Flanagan found the beating heart in this timeless tale and gave it something fresh and fantastic.

When preparing for this week's column, THE HAUNTING was on my mind. This led me to look back at some of the locations that Nick Groff has explored. One especially exciting place is called The Beattie Mansion. Located in St. Joseph, Missouri, something is fascinating about the history here. The mansion was built in 1857, and there appear to be numerous stories that are ripe for a haunted house. For a time, the home was used as a sort of refuge for the elderly and the mentally ill. You have to wonder how well they were treated, especially since there are so many reports of strange and disturbing happenings for those that dare to visit. If you'd like to get a more in-depth look at this incredible place, I urge you to check out this cool little episode of Haunting History, just click here to watch the episode.

This brings us to Nick. Having spent quite a bit of time there for an in-depth investigation, I was thrilled to hear what he had to say about the haunted souls that wander the darkened halls of the mansion. From the stories Mr. Groff told, to the many spooky claims you can find with a Google search, I was more than just a little intrigued by this real-life Haunting of Hill House. What about you guys? Who has had the pleasure of facing the paranormal activity taking place at The Beattie Mansion? Share your stories below because I'm utterly enthralled by this creepy house on a hill. Well, since I can't go there myself, here's what Nick had to say.

The Beattie Mansion is an amazing location with a lot of history to offer. This creepy building that lies on top of the hill overlooking the town below reminds me of the House on the Haunted Hill. I enjoyed speaking with people who had different experiences at the location, but what I really loved was investigating the unexplainable activity waiting inside. The Beattie Mansion is a unique structure with a lot of energy still lingering. It felt at times as if emotions from people would pass right through my body. Sleeping in different spots throughout the three-day investigation brought me closer to understanding the people that once lived and died at Beattie Mansion.

Every location offers something different based on the emotions from people and the environment. One of the things I loved during this investigation was testing the environment with different equipment to see if things change. I felt it during a storm one night, our experiment and the energy changed. We documented a lot of activity that I believe the outside storm and our experiments helped intensify the paranormal activity. I learned that being in a haunted location with the perfect storm outside and inside can produce weird phenomena. One day I would love to return as the owners, managers, and investigators running the Beattie Mansion are extremely nice and there is so much more I can learn. If you get the opportunity go and check it out!
