Nick Groff is one of the most respected names in television and beyond when it comes to the paranormal. He has had incredible experiences in some of the most haunted locations in the world. As a friend to Arrow in the Head, we’ve shared some very exciting experiences with Nick including a couple of wild and spooky moments that we’ve managed to capture on camera. Thus, we’ve decided to work with the television host and producer extraordinaire so he can share his knowledge and insight on all things that go bump in the night. With this bi-monthly column, we plan to delve into everything from urban legends to ghostly apparitions, to his take on some of the coolest genre flicks ever. This is Nick Groff Investigates…!
REALITY BASED VIRUS FLICKS!
When Nick Groff and I work together on this particular column, we get to explore a number of spooky events and strange happenings. However, right now there are more than a few scary things happening in the world. Living in a time that feels a bit too familiar for horror fans is quite a frightening thing. Whether you believe it’s mostly mass hysteria or you are truly freaked out by Coronavirus, it’s a unique period of time we are currently existing in. In fact, when Nick and I were discussing what this weeks subject matter should be, it felt like a perfect opportunity to explore the real life scenario and how a global event such as this has been portrayed in cinema.
Of course there are a number of frightening tales that seem to mirror the current state, but perhaps for many of you it’s a little therapeutic watching films like CABIN FEVER, 28 DAYS LATER, CONTAGION, OUTBREAK, THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN and the many other killer virus flicks. Yet perhaps for others, the last thing in the world you’d want to do is see a scary movie about infection and a killer virus when, in real life, you make your way to a grocery story and find it’s impossible to purchase water or toilet paper – yeah, that one still puzzles me.
I myself have always appreciated when a filmmaker takes a relevant story and twists and turns it into something truly chiling. I remember as a child catching an old TV-movie on TNT or something like that called The Day After. While not a horror film per say, this look at the devastation of nuclear war gave me nightmares for weeks. Considering there are so many movies based on real life events, Nick and I decided to discuss some of the films that deal with a virus – it’s a safe bet if you are currently working or studying at home thanks to the current situation that you can find these suggestions on streaming channels while spending time away from the crowds. Here is what Mr. Groff has to say about what to watch during the situation we are living in.
And as a side note, please stay safe out there and do your best to assist others that are in need.
"I've been extremely busy with the G CREW podcast show and filming new episodes with some incredible guests! It’s hard to slow down with several new projects that I am executive producing and hosting. The world has been crazy lately and reminds me of several movies that I have seen while at home. 28 DAYS LATER and OUTBREAK are two that come to mind. I typically try to watch a movie every night, or a new episode from an ongoing series before I sleep. It’s my only time to escape reality and zone out in my crazy life. The other place is training in the gym. It depends what mood I am in and what series or film catches my attention at that moment. Now is the time while at home to catch up on those movies or a series you've wanted to see, or even some G CREW episodes https://www.patreon.com/G_CREW!
The film CONTAGION (2011) reminds me a bit of what is happening in today's world. It is scary, but we can't stop doing what we strive for everyday in pushing forward. Yes, stay healthy and do not go out out if sick, so you don't get others sick, but the fact is we human's can't stop functioning everyday as a civilization to progress forward. I fear that chaos of the mind will strike fright in others to not leave their bubbles that will be created to hide in. We could become a society where we live in the shadows instead of the light. The world will change and movies that were fictionalized will become a reality. Hopefully this will not happen, but I think it is smart for the sick to get better first before spreading to others. That is taking responsibility and others should keep a healthy immune system in their everyday life so they can fight off any virus they come in contact with quicker.
Movies or series’ do emotionally move me at times depending on what the storyline is and ending. That is the beautiful thing about films, episodic series and music, they can move us personally in different ways. I have caught up on movies I wanted to see. There are many others I will watch but right now I have had the chance to view a lot. I hope everyone is staying safe in the world and protecting loved ones from getting sick. Keep a healthy diet, a good immune system and stay fit. Watch a movie, relax and keep positive. Have a good day!"
