Nia Vardalos & John Corbett will return for My Big Fat Greek Wedding sequel

Back in 2002 MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING was the little movie that could. The independent film went on to gross over $240 million in domestic theaters (despite never reaching the top spot at the weekly box office charts), and only cost $5 million to produce. I'm guessing star and screenwriter Nia Vardalos is hoping lightning will strike twice with a sequel.

It's been announced Gold Circle, HBO Films and Playtone Productions (backers for the original film) are developing a sequel to MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING. Nia Vardalos will return to write and star, but this time she also wants to direct the movie. John Corbett will be back as well as her husband in the planned film. The sequel will follow "the lovably loud Portokalos family who return after a family secret is revealed and a bigger, fatter wedding brings the big fat Greek family back together again."

Nia Vardalos on the sequel:

“Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I’m ready to write the next chapter of my family story. Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.”

I really didn't like MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, and have absolutely no interest in seeing the sequel, however there are probably some people who are very excited for MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2. No word on when filming might start or when the sequel will be released, but there will likely be more news on the project in the near future.
