It seems that writer/director Harmony Korine‘s SPRING BREAKERS is set to divide audiences on just what it actually is. Excessive glamorization of a hedonistic lifestyle or cautionary tale as a result of it? Reviews have been about as mixed, but they all seemed to agree tha the film was an intriguing one, ripe with style, shock, and humor, most notably from James Franco as a drug-dealer named Alien. The Disney princess stars Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens in the film feels like a metaphoric move to show the destruction of innocence, or at least our perception of it. I’m still a little amazed that he got them into the movie, especially given the content of it.
Today, we have another look at the international trailer, this time with more swearing, innuendo, and a few scattered boobies, which pushes us further into the not-so-pretty paradise that becomes these girl’s lives, which get turned upside down after robbing a convenience store to fund their spring break where they get wrapped up in guns, drugs, and everything your parents don’t want you to get wrapped up in while sewing your oats on a sunny beach in a foreign land.
Take a look:
I’m more than intrigued to see this. Corine, who wrote the movie KIDS, as well as GUMMO (which he also directed), has a base-level style that takes a look at the seedier, nastier side of life, but in a way that feels like you’re really seeing how the “other side” lives. If nothing else, his work takes you on a journey, even if it’s one you wished you’d never gone on. I’m happy to take the trip with SPRING BREAKERS, even if I regret it later.
SPRING BREAKERS, starring Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Rachel Corine, and Ashley Benson is set to unleash on March 22, 2013.
