New trailer for Gerard Butler’s Geostorm looks wonderfully silly

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

The first trailer for Gerard Butler's GEOSTORM was rather grim, what with all of the world-ending natural disasters sweeping the globe, but I'm incredibly pleased to see that the second trailer for the environmental disaster flick has pumped up the fun factor in a big way. After a series of natural disasters threatened the planet, an intricate network of satellites was created in order to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. When those same satellites begin malfunctioning, the only man who can save the world is Gerard Butler. Cue theme music.

"Sorry about that, I literally had to fly in from outer space."

There are so many things happening in this trailer that it's almost hilarious. You've got Gerard Butler up on a space station, Jim Sturgess and Abbie Cornish kidnapping the President of the United States (Andy Garcia), plus all the typical disaster porn scenarios which you'd expect from Roland Emmerich's long-time writing/producing partner Dean Devlin. GEOSTORM is the directorial debut of Devlin, but it seems that production didn't go as smoothly as the studio had hoped. After a few disastrous test-screenings, the studio brought in Jerry Bruckheimer to consult on the film to see what could be done to whip it into shape. Several weeks of reshoots later took place under the direction of Danny Cannon (JUDGE DREDD), but we still have a few months ahead of us before we see whether it was all worthwhile. If anything, GEOSTORM looks as though it will give you plenty of bang for your buck.

The official synopsis for GEOSTORM:

After an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But now, something has gone wrong—the system built to protect the Earth is attacking it, and it’s a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything…and everyone along with it.

GEOSTORM is set for an October 20, 2017 release.
