The final trailer for DIVERGENT has arrived and it's chock full of the themes we've come to expect from young adult adaptations. Starring Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet, Theo James, Miles Teller, Maggie Q, Jai Courtney, Zoë Kravitz, Ray Stevenson, Tony Goldwyn, Ashley Judd, and Ansel Elgort, the film is an adaptation of the series of YA novels by author Veronica Roth with director Neil Burger (LIMITLESS) leading the charge.
Take a look:
Here's the synopsis:
Set in a futuristic dystopia where society is divided into five factions that each represent a different virtue, teenagers have to decide if they want to stay in their faction or switch to another – for the rest of their lives. Tris Prior makes a choice that surprises everyone. Then Tris and her fellow faction-members have to live through a highly competitive initiation process to live out the choice they have made. They must undergo extreme physical and intense psychological tests, that transform them all. But Tris has a secret that she is Divergent, which means she doesn't fit into any one group. If anyone knew, it would mean a certain death. As she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, this secret might help her save the people she loves… or it might destroy her.
This just isn't my cup of tea, really, but I certainly won't begrudge fans of the books from enjoying it. For me it looks pretty standard issue young adult with themes of rebellion, identity, and all the other shit that goes with adolescence, all mixed up in some Ayn Rand/George Orwell inspired sci-fi gobbledygook. And hey, that's cool for those that are into it. It's a hell of a cast for something in this genre and it at least looks more entertaining than that other YA series that we're happy to see resting in the grave, right?
DIVERGENT opens on March 21, 2014.
