So, we have a new trailer for EPIC, the animated adventure pic from Blue Sky studios (ICE AGE, RIO) starring Amanda Seyfried, Colin Farrell, Josh Hutcherson, Jason Sudeikis, Aziz Ansari, Chris O’Dowd, and Christoph Waltz, as well as a few “musical” stars, including Pitbull, Steven Tyler, and Beyonce Knowles (because, why not?). We’ve seen a couple trailers already, which I thought were pretty decent and held a nice air of mystery without going “full kiddie,”but this new one puts it all out there, even shamelessly replacing the Snow Patrol song they’d used previously with Owl City’s “Shooting Star,” which played my ass out of the theater after enduring ESCAPE FROM PLANET EARTH.
I still think EPIC looks like fun and very well may be one of the better animated films of the year, but this marketing shift sells the previous trailers down the river. This new trailer is supposed to play in from of Dreamworks’ THE CROODS this weekend, so I’m sure they’re trying to capitalize on the squealing youngsters who fall under a trance whenever slapstick antics play out with an Owl City soundtrack. I get it. But, I don’t have to like it.
Take a look:
Here’s the synopsis:
A teenager finds herself transported to a deep forest setting where a battle between the forces of good and the forces of evil is taking place. She bands together with a rag-tag group characters in order to save their world — and ours.
EPIC is slated to hit theaters in 3D on May 24, 2013.
