New Terminator: Genisys details reveal connection to original movies

Some intriguing new details regarding TERMINATOR: GENISYS have come forth courtesy of SlashFilm, which made it onto the New Orleans set of the Alan Taylor-directed thriller. While much of the film remains shrouded in secrecy, we now know how it relates to the OG Terminator films, as well as what the producers have in store for this new franchise.

Regarding how it fits in with TERMINATOR 1-3:

Terminator: Genisys was described as not a traditional remake or a continuation or a sequel, but more of a reimagining — kind of like JJ Abrams’ Star Trek. The film will allow moviegoers to experience the story we have already seen, but in a different way. The story features a divergent timeline that goes off an entirely different direction, and taking is down a road we’ve never been on before. This is not a direct sequel, there is no straight line from A to B.

The site also goes on to say that while GENISYS won’t exactly ignore TERMINATOR 3 or TERMINATOR SALVATION, the James Cameron films are the main source of inspiration. (However, it really does sound like SALVATION will more or less be a non-factor.)

As far as character changes go, it turns out Kyle Reese and John Connor are actually aware of their father-son status when we meet them in the future. As for Arnold’s T-800, he’s apparently a “version of the classic T-800 from a timeline we’ve never seen and in a way we’ve never seen. He’s spent a lot of time with Sarah Connor already.” This we could have gathered from the trailer.
