With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker bringing the Skywalker saga to an end, the franchise will be charting a new course on the big screen. There are multiple new Star Wars movies in development, including one set to be written and directed by Taika Waititi.
The project was first announced last year with Disney saying, “Get ready for an unforgettable ride!” While we still don’t know all that much about Taika Waititi’s new Star Wars movie, the director recently spoke with Wired to tease that although it’s still in the early stages, they do have a story laid out.
It’s still in the ‘EXT. SPACE’ stage. But we’ve got a story. I’m really excited by it because it feels very me.
It’s difficult to imagine what a Star Wars movie from the mind of Taika Waititi will look like, or more specifically, it’s hard to imagine Lucasfilm letting Taika Waititi putting his own stamp on the franchise. When asked if it’s been difficult to meld his tone with the Star Wars franchise, Waititi said, “I tend to go down that little sincerity alleyway in my films. I like to fool the viewer into thinking ‘Ha it’s this’ and then them going, ‘Damn it, you made me feel something!’“
Before we get to witness Taika Waititi’s vision of Star Wars, the next new Star Wars movie will be Rogue Squadron. The film will be directed by Wonder Woman 1984‘s Patty Jenkins and will introduce audiences to “a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.” Jenkins has said that she’s using her fighter pilot father as an inspiration and wants to make the “greatest fighter pilot movie ever made.”
