A month ago, it was reported that Kathleen Kennedy was not ready to announce a new Star Wars film until she felt she was confident it was going to develop with the right talent behind it. After a few start/stops with films like a Rogue Squadron movie to be directed by Patty Jenkins and her infamous retooling of the last theatrical release, Solo: A Star Wars Story, it would seem that the rumor of a Damon Lindelof Star Wars movie is now becoming a reality. Especially since the project now has a director.
Star Wars had been going strong on the Disney+ service with new shows like Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi, but Deadline is now reporting the secret Lindelof screenplay will now be directed by Ms. Marvel’s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. It’s also reported that Lindelof has a co-writer on the script, but it is not yet revealed who the other scribe is. The script is still being written, but with Obaid-Chinoy now attached, Lucasfilm feels more comfortable that a singular vision can be developed.
Deadline has not been able to get Lucasfilm or Obaid-Chinoy to comment on the news. This comes off the heels of the recent success of Marvel Studio’s Ms. Marvel, which had Obaid-Chinoy helming a few episodes and had been impressing Disney with what she’s been able to bring to somewhat new material on an established brand name. Obaid-Chinoy is an Oscar and Emmy-winning director who has collected acclaim for her past works, which include the documentary shorts titled, Saving Face and A Girl in the River, The Price of Forgiveness. She is also attached to an adaptation of Brilliance, which is being developed for Will Smith at Paramount.
The plot details of this Star Wars film are currently kept in secrecy. It has been announced that Taika Watiti of Marvel’s Thor films is also developing his own Star Wars film, and there was the long-standing announcement of a trilogy to be written and directed by Rian Johnson ever since The Last Jedi was completed. Those films are said to be completely detached from the Skywalker Saga, which had been concluded with J.J. Abrams’ The Rise of Skywalker.
