Two DiCaprio stories in succession? Must be ladies night here at AITH! And really I can’t tell which flick I’m looking forward to more, Chris Nolan’s mind-bending original (INCEPTION) or Marty Scorsese’s adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s SHUTTER ISLAND. Guess I have a good six weeks to make up my mind. But until then, we’ve got a fresh still from the latter flick, which shows Leo and Mark Ruffalo matching wits with Sir Ben Kingsley!
Scripted by Laeta Kalogridis (NIGHT WATCH, BATTLE ANGEL), SHUTTER ISLAND picks up in:
1954, when up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston’s Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. He’s been pushing for an assignment on the island for personal reasons, but before long he wonders whether he hasn’t been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister. Teddy’s shrewd investigating skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals “escape” in the confusion, and the puzzling, improbable clues multiply, Teddy begins to doubt everything – his memory, his partner, even his own sanity.
The first trailer for the flick looked pretty damn tight, the second one cool, but a little less so. One thing remains: with a cast of Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer (below), Michelle Williams, Patricia Clarkson, Max von Sydow, Jackie Earle Haley, Elias Koteas, Ted Levine and John Carroll Lynch – it’d be hard to f*ck this one up completely.
Let’s go Marty, we all have faith!
SHUTTER ISLAND hits theaters Feb. 19, 2010.
