New Scream movie: Directors say picture is locked and score complete

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Seven months have passed since filming wrapped on the new Scream movie from Ready or Not (watch it HERE) directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and we still have about seven months to wait before the film's January 14, 2022 theatrical release date. Right in the middle of the time between filming and release, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett have taken to social media to announce that the new Scream (which is simply titled Scream) is picture locked and the score is finished.

Picture lock is the stage in post-production when editing is complete and the movie is ready for final touches like the musical score, color correction, etc.

While Marco Beltrami composed the score for all four previous Scream movies, the score for this one has been composed by Brian Tyler.

The new Scream is shrouded in secrecy, so an official synopsis has never been released. We do know that the screenplay was written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, and the film finds franchise stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette reprising the roles of Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, and Dewey Riley. Scream 4's Marley Shelton is also back as Judy Hicks.

The returning stars are joined in the cast by Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Mason Gooding, Dylan Minnette, Jack Quaid, Mikey Madison, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Kyle Gallner, and Sonia Ammar.

Barrera, who plays a character named Samantha Carpenter in Scream and can be seen in the newly released film In the Heights, said

[Directors] Matt [Bettinelli-Olpin] and Tyler [Gillett] bring their freshness to it, but we’re honoring Wes [Craven]. I think it’ll make the fans happy, but also bring in a new audience to the movies, which I’m excited about."

Vanderbilt produced the film for Project X Entertainment, alongside Paul Neinstein and William Sherak. Chad Villella and Kevin Williamson serve as executive producers. The new Scream is coming to us from Paramount and Spyglass.
