Although I never grew up with the Power Rangers, it’s hard to deny just how popular the franchise is. Since its debut in the early ’90s, the series has maintained a pretty constant presence on television. Unfortunately, the Power Rangers haven’t enjoyed quite the same success on the big screen, with the 2017 reboot movie failing to impress at the box office. But you can’t keep a good Ranger down and it was announced last year that a whole new Power Rangers cinematic universe was in the works under the eye of Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F–king World). It wasn’t clear at the time just where this new Power Rangers universe would call home, but Deadline has now revealed that the project has been set up at Netflix.
Entertainment One President of Global Television Michael Lombardo gave a small update on the Power Rangers cinematic universe at Netflix.
Since we set up Power Rangers with Jonathan, we pitched really a whole-world approach. It’s not just one show, it is shows followed by films, some kids’ programming. We have found a great writing partner for him, they are off. Knock on wood, Netflix is excited, we’re excited, we hope to have some news soon.
Jonathan Entwistle was originally in talks to direct a new Power Rangers movie, but that role expanded to include an entire universe. It was previously said that Entwistle will act as something of a “conductor” for a connected story universe that will span multiple platforms. In his own statement at the time, Entwistle said, “This is an unbelievable opportunity to deliver new Power Rangers to both new and existing generations of awaiting and adoring fans. We’ll bring the spirit of analog into the future, harnessing the action and storytelling that made this brand a success.” Entwistle confirmed that the Power Rangers would be coming to Netflix on Twitter, saying, “I guess the cat’s out of the bag! The new Power Rangers universe is coming to Netflix.“
