New poster for Fences puts Denzel & Viola front & center

I can think of fewer actors who deserve a true showcase for their skills than Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. Davis has proven to be one of Hollywood’s most tested and reliable thespians ever since her Oscar-nominated performance in 2008’s DOUBT put her on the map, and Denzel is, well, he’s Denzel. What more needs to be said? They are two of the best working today and their newest film, FENCES, is already generating buzz as being among their best work. Paramount recently put out a new poster and the two vets are front and center in suitably dramatic fashion.

It’s simple and sweet in execution, and gets the idea across that at the movie’s heart is a story about an American family struggling to live the dream. But despite the black and white palette not everything is as simple as it seems, and though these two look happy and loving underneath there’s a lot of turmoil and pain waiting to burst. I know that sounds like an over-analyzation of a poster, but watching the trailer it’s obvious this isn’t a cookie-cutter tale of a loving family just trying to "make it."
