Many adults have fond memories of playing with their robot toys on the living room floor, having them bash dinosaurs they pretended were monsters because their parents were too cheap to buy actual monster toys. With PACIFIC RIM UPRISING we will get to see that make-believe carnage come to live in a massive display of colorful destruction at the hands of robots and monsters. The new trailer for the movie puts on its best show yet, delving into the story of how the new and improved Kaijus came into the world, and how the battle will go beyond just robots and monsters. Take a look above, and prepare to think about all the paperwork such chaos will result in.
Here is the plot synopsis:
John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.
The movie looks pretty fun and seems to embrace the idea that it's a movie about robots fighting monsters in the middle of sprawling cities. The addition of new and unique Jaegers going up against more menacing looking Kaijus does enough to make it seem like a worthy successor to the first PACIFIC RIM, which seems almost tame compared to this version. The whole movie looks like a giant sugar rush, and if nothing else, should be an exciting time at the movies. But if I have to hear that "Woah yeah!" track in the back of another piece of footage I'm going to hurl my computer at something breakable.
PACIFIC RIM UPRISING rises March 23.
