Man, I've been really looking forward to NEW MUTANTS for a long time. While I'm a huge fan of superhero movies, I was admittedly feeling a bit fatigued by how many of them had such similar plots and tones, so it was cool to find out that there was actually going to be a real deal superhero horror film coming out! Even if it turned out terrible, it would at least be unique.
However delays plagued the release of the film. Principle photography ended around 2017, but there were issues of extensive re-shoots (which ultimately didn't end up happening) that kept the release in limbo until February 2019…when it then got delayed again because of the merger between 20th Century Fox (that owned the rights to X-MEN and NEW MUTANTS) and Disney. It finally got a definitive release date by the aforementioned Disney on April 3, 2020…but then movies stopped coming out to theaters in general. So who knows when the film will come out at this point.
Luckily, Cinefex Magazine has released some new, awesome stills from the film, including the infamous Demon Bear from the comics! Take a look:
Meanwhile, NEW MUTANTS is directed by Josh Boone (THE FAULT IN OUR STARS) and stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin, also known as Magik; Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie, a.k.a. Cannonball; Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair, a.k.a. Wolfsbane; Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa a.k.a Sunspot; and Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar, the Native American telepath also known as “Mirage”.
Here's the official synopsis:
Teenage mutants try to come to grips with their superpowers while staying at a secret facility.
