In the upcoming movie MORTAL ENGINES, the world has become a place where people live in roving cities that are trying to devour each other for resources. That surely requires some massive visual effects, and the first full trailer for the movie is VFX extravaganza wherein cities race across the land and large planes fly over them. Brought to us by producer Peter Jackson and director Christian Rivers, MORTAL ENGINES will take us to a world of chaos and fast-paced action. Think MAD MAX for teens.
Here is the official synopsis for the movie, as well as a new poster:
Thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns. Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan)—who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London—finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future.
The trailer does a lot to show off the impressive effects and action, but little else. We can glean a lot of the story elements, like Hugo Weaving‘s villainous role as Thaddeus Valentine, as well as why Hilmar’s Hester wants to kill him. But there’s little else to sell the movie other than as a feast of action and effects, and the trailer doesn’t hint at any sense of wonder or at any charm from the leads. It’s just all action, action, action. We still have more trailers to see and plenty of time until release, but right now I’m not yet sold on everything this movie has to offer.
MORTAL ENGINES arrives December 14.
