The first full trailer for MANIAC starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill is here, and it does not fall shy of its title. The limited series from director Cary Joji Fukunaga (TRUE DETECTIVE, BEASTS OF NO NATION) and creator Patrick Somerville (THE LEFTOVERS) focuses on two people (Stone and Hill) who volunteer to test out a new drug and are then taken on a journey into the deepest parts of their mind.
The first trailer shows off the impressive, dramatic scope of this trippy new series, which will find Stone and Hill in a variety of scenarios ranging from something out of LORD OF THE RINGS to a more grounded, political espionage setting. The show also stars Justin Theroux (THE LEFTOVERS, MUTE), Billy Magnussen (GAME NIGHT) and the always great Sally Field.
The show looks utterly strange and fantastic, and even something that could’ve been a big, expensive feature movie. But the fact it’s a limited series means the depth of the premise can be more richly explored, which is always a positive when it comes to mind-bending shows that explore human psychology. That, and I kind of just want to watch as much Emma Stone the Elf as they can possibly give me.
Netflix also dropped some new photos, and you can take a look at a few of them below.
MANIAC premieres on Netflix September 21.
