The latest edition of the super-popular San Diego Comic-Con is currently underway, and one of the first presentations was a preview of New Line Cinema's upcoming horror slate, which includes Andy Muschietti's Stephen King adaptation IT: CHAPTER TWO, THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA, and the THE CONJURING 2 spin-off THE NUN.
The JoBlo Network's own Paul Shirey is at the SDCC and was in attendance for the New Line preview. A behind-the-scenes clip was shown as part of the IT: CHAPTER TWO preview, giving a look at a scene involving the grown up Losers Club and the return of Pennywise.
The release of IT: CHAPTER TWO is still over a year away. Pennywise won't be lurking on theatre screens again until September 6, 2019.
Everyone knows what IT is, but a project that needs a bit more attention to it is THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA, which was originally announced under the title THE CHILDREN. Directed by Michael Chaves and produced by James Wan, Emile Gladstone and Gary Dauberman, that film has the following synopsis:
La Llorona. The Weeping Woman. A horrifying apparition, caught between Heaven and Hell, trapped in a terrible fate sealed by her own hand. The mere mention of her name has struck terror around the world for generations. In life, she drowned her children in a jealous rage, throwing herself in the churning river after them as she wept in pain. Now her tears are eternal. They are lethal, and those who hear her death call in the night are doomed. La Llorona creeps in the shadows and preys on the children, desperate to replace her own. As the centuries have passed, her desire has grown more voracious… and her methods more terrifying.
In 1970s Los Angeles, La Llorona is stalking the night—and the children. Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm. Their only hope to survive La Llorona’s deadly wrath may be a disillusioned priest and the mysticism he practices to keep evil at bay, on the fringes where fear and faith collide.
Beware of her chilling wail… she will stop at nothing to lure you into the gloom. Because there is no peace for her anguish. There is no mercy for her soul. And there is no escape from the curse of La Llorona.
THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA is scheduled for an April 19, 2019 release.
The presentation wrapped up with a look at THE NUN, which is set to hit theatres in less than two months, on September 7th.
I'm looking forward to all three of these films, so it's good to hear that they all appear to be solid additions to the genre. I'm especially interested in hearing more about LA LLORONA in the months ahead, because viewers pretty much already know whether or not they're going to be watching THE NUN or IT. LA LLORONA is the most mysterious of the bunch.
